This fiction novel is about a friendship that is formed through gaming. Often at times a little ominous, because it is foreshadowed that they will not always be friends. They have a friendship that seems to come and go. While they both promise to always forgive each other, there are some things onthat they can’t forgive. They both help each other through a difficult time in their lives, and then decide that they are going to create a game together.
I feel that there is a lot of time spent on describing the thoughts and feelings of side characters, which is nice but unnecessary. There was also A LOT of background information that helped to world build and give the reader a bigger picture of who Sam and Sadie are.
The author really takes us through the process that they as game developers went through to create their famous game. From where they got their ideas, who did what, where they got their inspiration, their research methods, etc. You can tell that the author is very well read, especially on classic works of fiction.
At first the story reads as a third person ominous POV that switches between Sam and Sadies POV, but later reads more of a magazine article where an unknown person is narrating the story. It switches time lines a bit from college years of developing the game to childhood, and then back again.
Neither Sadie nor Sam are super good at being friends, and the one character who has the best personality doesn’t make it.
Overall it wasn’t as good as I expected it to be.
